first pickings

courgette, redcurrants, mint 2

After 3 days away from the plot my first courgette pickings of the year are already nudging marrow size.  I only have two plants but they have lots of space and are producing copious flowers.  I don’t know what variety they are as both were given to me.  I can’t be sure if their pale colour is how they’re supposed to be or a sign of the soil being a bit deficient in magnesium.  I think I’ll add some epsom salts next time I water just in case.

I finally got round to picking some of Pat and Robin’s redcurrants which will be made into redcurrant jelly.  I’m not sure yet whether I’ll add the mint to it but a cut sprig never goes begging in our house as long as there are potatoes in the cupboard.
