happy hat making for the Big Knit

big knit + logos copyNo fair weather knitting for me; I’m strictly a poor weather knitter.  Before I’ll even consider dusting off my needles and curling up on the sofa it has to be dark, cold and wet outside.  I’m coming out of crafting hibernation early to make a teeny tiny hat for an Innocent smoothie in support of Age Concern and Help the Aged. Last years campaign raised £253,384 to help older people stay healthy through the winter months (35p from every hatted smoothie  sold).  The deadline for sending hats is Friday 16th October and they’ll be in Sainsbury’s stores from 4th November.  Will you remind me to get a wriggle on once we get into October?  You know how distracting the veggie patch can be!

I’m thinking… a gardening inspired hat like this pattern.  Maybe even two or three (but definitely not 1758 hats)Big knit - strawberry hat

If you’ve not done any knitting before there are plenty of simple tutorials on YouTube to help you on your way.  It’s not as mysterious an art as non-knitters might think!  You’ll need to get these items and download a pattern from here.  One hat can take as little as 25 minutes to make depending on how confident you are.

ps.  creating a post entirely with someone else’s images doesn’t feel quite right, even if it is for charity.  So just to make me feel better here’s a photo of my very favourite old person; my gorgeous, wise and funny 92 year old nan.  This photo was taken on Friday just one week after a cataract operation on her right eye.  I think she’s amazing and her consultant did too: when he told her she was virtually blind in that eye a few months ago she said ‘Oh it’s fine as long as I don’t do this‘ and with a knowing wink covered her good eye with her palm and chuckled.Nan in the garden at mums

#nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #easypeasylemoncake Fondly thinking of my Nan as I mix up the lemon cake batter with L. When I baked with her as a child we sometimes used a wooden spoon for mixing but I was in awe of the hand held whisk with the handle that seemed so miraculous. I love that @oxouk have a modern day version for mornings when our slow pace doesn't want to be interrupted by the whirr of machinery #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #oxogoodgrips #bakingwithkids #childhoodunplugged #slowsaturdays #lovedungarees Trying to decide whether to make lemon cake or these beetroot and chocolate muffins. I guess the boys will determine that as I've all the ingredients for one but not the other! Love having an on-line cookbook to browse through in my blog. #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #beetrootandchocolatemuffins #bakingwithkids #flashbackfriday here you go @cathy.heller my 2.5 year old self saying Hi to your 6 year old self! My love of gardening must have started at a young age. I'm pleased to say I get most of the water on the plants these days!
#nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #throwbackphotos #gardeningwithkids #70skid Writing clears my head. I write the words it's too scary to mutter. Sharing the words is scary too but in the sharing comes the feeling of being less alone in it. I dumped these words in a blog post 3 years ago. Time to let them fly and find someone who might be having a hard time today. Link to "how it feels sometimes parenting a 3 year old" in bio. Much love x #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #parentingistough #writingastherapy #newblogpost #gentleparenting Thanks Anna @imaginationtree for this brilliant toddler activity idea. 23 month old Luca filling up muffin tins with balls using our fab easygrip @oxouk tongs #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #oxogoodgrips #thelennyagency Regrann from @musicalgeorgemoorey - Alice White & George Shilling in action a few hours ago for session 6 of #spacesgloucester @gloucestercathedral #nationallotteryfunded Luca and I discovered the most amazing place in town today. A beautiful craft space where you pay £4 to make anything from beautiful beaded canvases to painted ornaments to mosaic door signs. What a peaceful way to spend an hour making a canvas for the boys. Luca helped too, mostly by bimbling about picking up pots of beads and letters. If you're in Gloucester you must check out @kftreasureseekers . Open daily including Saturdays and available for parties. We'll definitely be back!
