plot taming … oh my word!

Mum on the phone:  ”Shall we come over and help you at the allotment?”                   Me:  ”oh, it’s over a month since we last went – it’ll probably be a bit overgrown”       Mum at the plot:  ”oh my word, it’s a wilderness!”

And it is.  I wasn’t quite so polite in my assessment!  It’s actually not so very different from how it looked 8 years ago when we first took it on.

Thank goodness for kindly parents and a compliant baby who slept in his pushchair on and off in the shade of a tree while we toiled away in the blistering heat.  Hours spent just shearing grass and pulling out weeds.  The vetch seed that I’d sown as a green manure in the Autumn had died back  over winter and I intended to roughly dig it in and cover with black plastic to leave that part of the plot fallow for this year. But a lot can happen in the garden over a month of downpours and heatwaves so I spent much of my time pulling out vetch flowers from both the green manure patch and beyond!  Pretty thought aren’t they.

And there were some spring bulbs that had resurfaced again to cheer us on our way.  Yellow and purple irises that were starting to look a bit too wilty to photograph and lovely purple allium ball heads (not quite as attractive as in photos from previous years with a backdrop of mud and weeds!)

Entry filed under: allotment tales, home life.

We try to help when we can Nic. You know how trying we can be as parents but perseverence isn’t always enough is it with an allotment.

#nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #easypeasylemoncake Fondly thinking of my Nan as I mix up the lemon cake batter with L. When I baked with her as a child we sometimes used a wooden spoon for mixing but I was in awe of the hand held whisk with the handle that seemed so miraculous. I guess the boys will determine that as I've all the ingredients for one but not the other! Sharing the words is scary too but in the sharing comes the feeling of being less alone in it. I dumped these words in a blog post 3 years ago. Time to let them fly and find someone who might be having a hard time today. Link to "how it feels sometimes parenting a 3 year old" in bio. A beautiful craft space where you pay £4 to make anything from beautiful beaded canvases to painted ornaments to mosaic door signs. What a peaceful way to spend an hour making a canvas for the boys. Luca helped too, mostly by bimbling about picking up pots of beads and letters. If you're in Gloucester you must check out @kftreasureseekers . Open daily including Saturdays and available for parties. We'll definitely be back!
