a little splash of sunshine with Carotino cooking oil

Carotino oil pouring 4BSince attending the Maggies Nutrition course I’ve been using Carotino oil for all of our cooking. It’s a unique blend of Rapeseed Oil and Red Palm fruit oil which is the world’s richest natural plant source of carotenes – the nutrients which give carrots, tomatoes and red peppers their colour.  Carotino oil benefits 4B

It’s a great option for us as a family and gives a golden sunshine hue to the food we make. The simple joy of a crispy roastie or gold tinged fried egg has sidetracked me from trying anything more varied on their recipe pages (top of my ‘to-make’ list is macaroni cheese with tomatoes and onion) 9-2-14 - Carotino roasties 4B8-2-14 - yolky egg 4B

I began writing this post several months ago and soon after a friend shared a worrying  article about the harvesting of red palm oil and it’s impact on deforestation and wildlife. Having already decided to make the switch to Carotino I wanted to be sure it wasn’t an unethical choice so I contacted Carotino for a chat about their environmental policy. This was their informative and reassuring response:

We are very well aware of the environmental concerns surrounding palm oil production and I am pleased to be able to say that Carotino upholds the highest international and ethical standards when it comes to environmental issues. We are members of RSPO – Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil – which is an internationally respected body which promotes environmental issues around palm oil production. We also work on conservation projects with the WWF.

The article in RawBeauty which you sent a link to is incorrect in so far as it mentions Indonesia and Malaysia in the same breath when describing the abhorrent practices which go on in parts of Indonesia. Malaysia is, of course, a totally different country and has very strict laws on environmental issues, which are robustly enforced. I wish I could say the same about Indonesia, but Malaysia tends to get tarred with the same brush because of its relative proximity.

All the oil which goes into Carotino comes from Carotino’s own, long established plantations in Malaysia which are second to none when it comes to environmental and ethical issues. We have a whole section on environmental issues on our website, including our sustainability brochure and the corporate environmental policy (http://www.carotino.co.uk/carotinoenvironment.asp). Also on there is a news feature which was written in 2010 when there was some negative publicity about orangutans and the Indonesian palm industry. The article is still there because the information in it is still the case today.

I hope the above information allays any concerns you may have.

    What are the calorific values/technical info? Really keen to try this.

    Hi Denise, Nutritional info from the back of the bottle per 100ml…
    – 812 kcal
    – nil protein and carbohydrate
    – 92g total fat (52.5g mono/25.3g poly/14.3g sat fats)
    -cholesterol, sodium, fibre nil
    – Omega 3 fatty acids 6.6g
    – Omega 6 fatty acids 20g
    Hope that helps (means very little to me!). Label on the front also says due to thick consistency of the oil you use a third less.
