a toddler’s eye view of relationships – 23 questions to ask Mummy

June 11, 2015 at 11:50 am 4 comments

Whether you’re a Facebook user or not you’ll understand what I mean when I say I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I don’t like the way it sucks me in and gobbles up my free time with pointless trivia, other people’s arguments and, at it’s worse, assaults me with evidence of pure heartlessness. At it’s best, and the reason why I stay opted in, it connects me with loved ones and provides many heartwarming stories of compassion, love and kindness. A reminder that the world is not the hate-full place the media would have us believe.

The internet provides some wonderful ideas for crafting activities, creating our own family traditions, gentle parenting advice and amusing things to chat to E about. Like this Q&A that did the rounds on Facebook last week. I think we may have to repeat something like it year on year to see how E’s answers change with age (and mine!). So without any prompting, I asked 3 year old E for answers to the following questions (I did have to explain a couple of terms to him when he looked puzzled and said ”I don’t know what that means”)

1. What is something Mummy always says to you? Thank you

2. What makes Mummy happy? Hugging Euan

3. What makes Mummy sad? Don’t know. Nothing?

4. How does Mummy make you laugh? Tickling

5. What was Mummy like as a child? Small

6. How old is Mummy? 40

7. How tall is Mummy? a bit tall

8. What is Mummy’s favourite thing to do?  bobbinging Euan
(N: ”What’s bobbinging?”. E: ‘Don’t know”).

9. What does Mummy do when you’re not here? go to work

10. If Mummy becomes famous what will it be for? Don’t know

11. What is Mummy really good at? Bab
(Me: ‘‘What’s that?”. E: ”It’s when you do something very nice”)

12. What is Mummy not very good at? Badminton

13. What is Mummy’s job? doing letters on the computer

14. What is Mummy’s favourite food? I don’t notice

15. What makes you proud of Mummy? doing something very nice

16. If Mummy was a cartoon character who would she be? a bunny

17. What do you and Mummy do together? make Lego

18. How are you and Mummy the same? We’ve got bones

19. How are you and Mummy different? I’ve got different clothes on

20. How do you know Mummy loves you? I’ve got hugs in my brain

21. What does Mummy like best about Daddy? You love him very much

22. Where is Mummy’s favourite place to go? Hillfields

23. What did Mummy do before you were born? You made me

And how did my answers compare? He was pretty spot on with most of them.
My favourite food is peas and anything is pallatable with chutney or balsamic vinegar draped over it. Being a Mum makes me happy.  Letting other people’s opinions dent my self-confidence makes me sad. Doing something nice (bab!) for other people gives me a sense of purpose. Before E was born I hoped for a miracle. And what I like best about E’s Daddy is his compassionate heart, gentle strength and ability to discern when wise words or silent bear hugs are most needed.

Young E does make interesting comments on the spur of the moment.

[…] few years ago I shared a list of questions I asked 3 year old Euan and had wondered whether it might become an annual reflection as his vocabulary and understanding […]

NOURISH for #mindfulapril with @mamas_scrapbook - a scrambled egg start to my day. A carb heavy diet makes me lethargic and effects my mood so this sets me off on the right foot. Toddler L also loves it and it eases my mind about what else he eats in the day if I know he's had a good breakfast. #gloucesterlife #nipitinthebudblog
GROWTH - day 18 of #mindfulapril. One son the size of an emperor penguin and one the size of a Gremlin! #gloucesterlife thebudblog #glou
Obsessed with anything with wheels, I turn round to see Luca has nabbed someone's scooter at the park and is legging it! #gloucesterlife #nipitinthebudblog #scootingtoddler
Well this has been interesting! After a conversation with @pocketfulofconkers I did a Myers Briggs personality test and it seems to be pretty accurate (ISFJ 'Defender'). Do you know your personality type? How has it helped you to understand yourself or the challenges you have with others? #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #myersbriggspersonalitytype
BREATHE - day 17 of #mindfulapril. 6 years old and so happy to be doing this for the first time. His nearly 2 year old brother would try it right now if only he could reach! I'm definitely go to have to learn to pause and breathe when he's bigger. #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #mumbloggeruk
#mindfulapril day 16 - LIGHT. Luca, our little "bringer of light" bored of life on the outside when he was just a day old. Crazy to think he'll be two in just over a week. He brings us so much joy but is also a good metaphor for accepting the shadows that come with the light (aka he's a right monkey!) #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #lucabringeroflight
Missing this fella now he's back at school today. We'd happily go to @wwtslimbridge every day if we home schooled! #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #loveglos #slimbridgewwt #outdoorexplorers #mumbloggeruk
With Es return to school this morning, on a walk that saw our usual route closed off because of a fatal stabbing, I can't help but reflect on what kind of world he's growing up in. Creativity is so important to becoming who you're meant to be and when you're comfortable in your own skin kindness to others comes more easily. #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #creativekids #soulgrowing #newblogpost
The perfect cake for sneaking veg into! Courgette chocolate cake on the blog #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #courgettechocolatecake
This week's #myheartylife post is now up on the blog. The second week of the holidays brought with it fun outside despite the rain at our favourite bird park @wwtslimbridge and our local @stjamescityfarm #nipitinthebudblog #gloucesterlife #gratefuleveryday🙏
#mindfulapril combining days 14 and 15 with TREASURE and SLOW. Es favourite pastime is making Lego and i love how time seems to stand still for him when he's working on something. When I sit with him and join in it's fab because we're connecting over something he loves, the pace is slow, we sometimes talk but we mostly create in companionable silence. Luca is old enough now to try and join in or occupy himself pulling out every other toy in the room. Who cares if the house is a mess when this sort of creativity and connection is unfolding. #gloucesterlife #nipitinthebudblog #zeroplansday #mumbloggeruk #welovelego
"Happy as a pig in muck" was Luca yesterday at @stjamescityfarm trying to push a wheelbarrow! Will have to put him to work as a volunteer when he's older 😁 #gloucesterlife #nipitinthebudblog #helpfultoddlers
